MERRIAM, KANSAS – The REACH Healthcare Foundation this week approved $1,435,176 in grants to organizations addressing the health needs of poor and medically underserved children and adults. The Foundation awarded 16 program grants and four core operating grants in its first grant cycle for 2010. Among the recipients were two mental health and crisis support agencies awarded funding to provide health services onsite for their clients.
ReDiscover, a community mental health agency that provides counseling and therapy for individuals with mental health issues, was awarded a $76,620 program grant to hire a nurse practitioner at their Lee’s Summit, Mo., location, who will provide medical services for up to 500 clients during the grant year.
Synergy Services, Inc., which provides counseling, support services and emergency shelter for homeless and runaway youth, was awarded a program grant of $33,000 to place a registered nurse and medical case coordinator at the agency’s new Youth Resiliency Center in Kansas City’s Northland. The program will provide medical care to approximately 525 youth during the grant year.
Brenda Sharpe, President and CEO of the REACH Foundation, said the ReDiscover and Synergy projects offer examples of approaches to addressing the physical health problems that arise when individuals are struggling with mental health issues.
“Mental health disorders, and the medications that are used to treat them, can exacerbate or create other health problems,” said Sharpe. “By bringing medical services onsite, these organizations will be better positioned to address chronic disease, complications from medications and other health concerns that affect overall health and well-being.”
The grants awarded represent the first round of program grants for 2010. Organizations interested in applying for a program grant will have another opportunity to apply beginning in March 2010. The following organizations received grants in this funding cycle:
